Marlborough – The City Council approved a development agreement proposed by Walker Realty, LLC, to construct a large commercial project on Route 20, west of Glen Street, at the June 6 meeting. A study of a detailed site plan of the Apex Center of New England will continue by the Urban Affairs Committee and city department heads.
The proposed 475,000-square-foot complex will include two hotels, office buildings, restaurants and an indoor recreation and entertainment area that will feature a bowling alley, cart racing, laser tag, billiards and a rock climbing wall. Broad parking, traffic, sign and landscaping plans are also part of the concept plan.
“I am excited that Marlborough is continuing its positive momentum toward building a strong diversified business sector,” said Councilor Joseph Delano. “Apex Center will add hundreds of jobs and bring in over $1 million in revenue each year which will reduce pressure on the residential tax rate.”
In response to concern of the strain on public safety services in the immediate area of the program, raised by councilors Matt Elder and Peter Juaire, the agreement will also include a public safety mitigation payment to be determined by Mayor Arthur VIgeant and developers. Attorney Arthur Bergeron, representing Apex Center developers, said they are planning to begin construction in July.
