Obit Maria FriasHudson – Maria Chaves Frias, 94, of Hudson, fondly known as Tia Mariquinhas, died peacefully at home Tuesday, June 14, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

Maria was born Aug. 23, 1921 in Hudson Hospital, daughter of the late Manuel P. and Rosa Chaves, and was very proud of her Santa Maria, the Azores of Portugal heritage. She was the mother of 17 children and was employed at the former Thomas Taylor and Sons of Hudson for 25 years. She was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson.

Maria was the loving mother of Antonio Frias and his wife Manuela, Joseph Frias and his wife Joanne, Manuel Frias and his wife Aldora, David Frias, Maria da Silva and her husband Aluisio, Rosa Garcia and her husband Luis, Armindo Frias and his wife Joanne, all of Hudson, and Theresa Frias of Marlborough; her daughter in-law, Phyllis Frias of Chicago, Ill.; and son-in-law, Antonio Leandres of Bradenton, Fla. She was predeceased by her husband, Antonio Joquim Frias; her daughters, Isabel Leandres and Lena Frias; her sons, Steven Frias, John Frias, Gilbert Frias, and Dennis Frias; and grandsons, Michael Reuben and Maximillian Reuben. She also leaves her 34 loving grandchildren, 54 loving great-grandchildren; and her four adoring great-great grandchildren.

Maria cherished her family, and every family gathering was a festivity. Her home in Hudson, as well as in the Maia, Santa Maria, was the nucleus. Her “open door policy” offered her family and friends to pop in daily which she truly loved. She adored “Fado” and all music and folklore for that meant family and time spent together.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 18, at 9 a.m., in Saint Michael’s Church, 21 Manning St., Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael’s Cemetery, Hudson. Family and friends may attend calling hours Friday, June 17, from 4-8 p.m., at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson (www.tighehamilton.com).
