Grafton – The Grafton Public Library will celebrate the birthday of Jerome Wheelock Saturday, June 18, beginning at 9 a.m. at the library, 35 Grafton Common.
Wheelock was an American inventor, born in Grafton, who made his fame and fortune with a number of Industrial Revolution inventions, including a cylinder packing and a steam engine valve. He donated $100,000 to build a town hall or public library, and in 1927, the funds matured to allow construction of the current Grafton Library. His statue overlooks the Grafton Common.
The birthday event will feature lawn games like croquet, bocce, and horseshoes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for all ages. Bubbles, sidewalk chalk and other outdoor games will also be available. Enjoy the gardens, check out the antiques fair on the common, sign up for the 2016 Summer Reading Program, or purchase historic and antiques books at the Friends of the Grafton Public Library book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., there will be cake and punch to celebrate Wheelock’s birthday.
