Westborough – After the stresses, physical, mental and emotional, of being deployed, veterans face a myriad of challenges when they finally come home. One organization, Fishing for Warriors, hopes to help those brave men and women find a little bit of joy and happiness by offering them a chance to experience a high level sporting event or activity, at no cost to them.
Fishing for Warriors was founded and is now led by former service members Al Lizotte, Paul George, Denzil Drewry, and Bob Hunt. The not-for-profit organization offers veterans, Drewry said, the chance to escape their worries for a bit and do such things as go on a destination fishing trip, attend last day of the U.S. Open golf championships, or attend a major league championship playoff game.
Late last year the group hosted its first trip when it took several veterans to Costa Rica for a fishing trip. Photos from that trip can be viewed on the website, www.fishingwithwarriors.us.
“These men and women have been through so much already,” Drewry said. “We just want to thank them for their service and give them an opportunity to experience something very special.”
As its website states, the group hopes the experience will provide “Good food, good accommodations, great atmosphere and friends that understand exactly what you have had to deal with.
The organization will be hosting a golf fundraiser Monday, Aug. 8 at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston. The cost is $125 per golfer and includes 18 holes, Florida-style, shotgun start; cart, buffet dinner at the end of the event, an auction and raffles. A registration form is available on the website, www.fishingwithwarriors.us.
The group is also currently seeking sponsors for the event, for financial donations as well as auction and raffle items.
Those wishing to make a monetary donation may mail a check to: Fishing With Warriors, Inc.,
