Shrewsbury – Worcester County Sheriff’s Seniors’ Annual Picnic was a great success Aug. 20. Sponsored by Worcester County Sheriff Lewis Evangelidis, the picnic is an annual event that brings together seniors from all over Massachusetts. The event, held at the Scandinavian Athletic Club in Shrewsbury was attended by well over 1,000 guests who were served by several score of volunteer staff. A hot day was mitigated to some extent by an awning over the picnic tables and visitors could cool-off in a water mist spray positioned at the entrance to the club.
A meal of hamburgers, hot dogs and roasted corn was served to all comers. Sponsor booths for a number of healthcare companies and senior living developments were side-by-side with such vendors as 2-Ovens Pizza and a soft drink booth which served-up a variety of free cold drinks. After lunch had been served, a bingo tournament was held to the enjoyment of the guests. The senior picnic is a highlight of the annual public service efforts of “Sheriff Lew’s” office.
Shrewsbury resident Ruth Cohen and her son Steve, composed this poem of thanks –
A great big thanks to Sheriff Lew
And his excellent volunteer crew.
Every year SAC Park is where
They put on this great affair.
A beautiful day with plenty of sun,
a wonderful setting for so much fun.
Everyone was in such a great mood,
as we were all served such delicious food.
Seated, we met with some really nice folks.
We listened to the MC telling his jokes.
Then, we played some Bingo, we all got a card.
But, winning we found would be so very hard.
Congrats to the winners, who won lots of “dough”.
We didn’t win any. It was fun, though.
It’s really so awesome to have this event.
We are always so happy that we went.
Thanks to the Sheriff who sponsors this day
and to all of the youngsters who helped, we must say.
It does mean so much to know that you care
to make this a day that we all can share.
