Northborough – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks football team opened up the first week of the season by defeating the Nashoba Regional High School Chieftains, the defending the Division 2 state champions, by a score of 13-7 in a game played Sept. 9 in Northborough.
Algonquin senior Patrick Duffy intercepted a pass from Nashoba quarterback Owen Fay early in the second quarter, giving Algonquin excellent field position. Senior Max Cerasoli ran in for a touchdown two plays later for the game’s first score. John Polymeros kicked in the extra point, as well as two field goals to account for the rest of Algonquin’s scoring.
Nashoba’s lone touchdown came on an 85-yard kickoff return by Nate Mansour in the fourth quarter.
Algonquin (1-0) will be travelling to Marlborough to take on the Panthers at Kelleher Field while Nashoba (0-1) will host Shrewsbury. Both games will be played Friday, September 16 at 7 p.m.
