Region – Many parents and grandparents who have bought coloring books for children in the family through the years, encouraging them to sit quietly and color, are now enjoying the popular pastime as a solo activity or socially in a group. As part of the trend, the adult coloring class held each Tuesday at the Recovery Connection in Marlborough is becoming more and more popular as participants spread the word on how they find it relaxing and enjoyable.
“We have books with nature photos and drawings called ‘Color Me Happy,’ and coloring templates that will make you smile,” said instructor and leader Carelle Carter. “Classes typically have from 9 to 12 women and men. We keep conversation light so they can relax while coloring.”
Carter researched the new pastime for several weeks before introducing the class at the center.
“Adult coloring provides fun and a calming effect on the mind and helps promote overall wellness,” she said.
Katie Disciullo, an enthusiastic member of the class, said: “It keeps me busy – out of my head – and it is a lot of fun.”
Six months ago, Lisa Martino, activities director at the Marlborough Senior Center, introduced adult coloring in conjunction with “Girl Talk Time.”
“It has really taken off and we seem to have more ladies joining the group each month, which is fantastic,” she said. “Coloring is a fun, relaxing activity that reduces anxiety and increases self-esteem. More than that the coloring seems to open the mind and has been the backdrop for some great conversations, covering everything from politics to current events with warmth, compassion, and lots and lots of laughs.”
At the Hudson Senior Center, participants are provided a cold summer beverage, coloring books and colored pencils as instructor Ana Terra-Salomao leads the monthly group that meets on the deck as weather permits.
“Interest in coloring has grown in popularity,” said Janice Long, director of the Hudson center. “Some women have said their husbands are also interested in joining the group.”
The Marlborough Public Library offers an Adult Color Club that meets the first Monday of every month form 6:30 pm to 8 p.m. Monthly adult coloring group meetings are also held in Hudson, Northborough and Westborough public libraries.
