Worcester – The St. John’s High School Pioneers football team staged a late rally to come from behind and defeat their cross-town rivals, the Shrewsbury High School Colonials, by a score of 38-35 in a game played under the lights at Assumption College Oct. 7.
St. John’s, ranked number 1 in the local media poll, got off to a slow start and found themselves down 21-8 at halftime, but stormed back with four touchdowns in the second half, including the game winner with just a minute remaining on the clock.
St. John’s lone score in the first half came on a 97-yard kickoff return by freshman Eammon Dennis. In the second half, quarterback Steven Bucciaglia rushed for two touchdowns and completed touchdown passes to Zach Pedone and Josh Shrestha.
Shrewsbury quarterback Drew Campanale completed touchdown passes to Tim Rioux and Brian Moura, and carried the ball in himself on a 1-yard run. Rioux also rushed for two touchdowns, in addition to his touchdown completion.
St. John’s improves to 4-1 on the season and will face Wachusett at home on Saturday, October 15. Shrewsbury, now 3-2 on the season, will host Algonquin next Friday, Oct. 14.
