Worcester- The Briarwood Community is pleased to announce the final public art exhibit in a series of six for 2016. “Uncle Sam Wants You! The Propaganda Posters of WWI,” collected by Gordon Lankton, will be on display Sunday, Nov. 6 through Friday, Dec. 30 at The Gallery at Briarwood, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester.

The opening reception will take place on Sunday, Nov. 6 between 2-4  p.m.. Guests will have an opportunity to meet Lankton, who is currently a resident at Briarwood. The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

These posters feature remarkable artwork and vivid colors with different types of messaging from recruitment messages to appeals for the sale of Liberty Bonds. Women’s images, both on the homefront and in uniform are central to a number of the featured posters. Many important artists contributed to the war effort including Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857-April 23, 1926) who created an iconic image of a bombed out New York City and devastated Statue of Liberty as an arresting image to warn Americans of the perils of an invasion.

The WWI poster collection was assembled in recent years to compliment an almost complete set of US published World War II posters which Briarwood resident Gordon Lankton had collected as a young boy in Peoria.

Lankton is the retired president of Nypro Inc., world headquartered in Clinton and prior to its sale to Jabil in 2015, Nypro Inc. was the largest specialty plastics molding company in the world. He is the premier American collector of Russian icons, and founder of the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton. In 2009 he received the Pushkin prize from the Russian government.

The exhibit is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Group tours and those wishing to visit on weekends may make arrangements by contacting Anita Thomas at 508-852-9007 or by e-mailing [email protected].

Gallery at Briarwood exhibits scheduled for 2017 will feature artists Linda Johnson, Gene McCarthy, Sharon Smith Viles, Sue Sedgwick, photographer Ron Rosenstock and antique puzzle collector, Bob Armstrong.

Briarwood is a non-profit senior living community that includes Independent Living cottages and apartments, Assistance in Living services, and Knollwood Nursing Center for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services.
