These posters feature remarkable artwork and vivid colors with different types of messaging from recruitment messages to appeals for the sale of Liberty Bonds. Women’s images, both on the homefront and in uniform are central to a number of the featured posters. Many important artists contributed to the war effort including Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857-April 23, 1926) who created an iconic image of a bombed out New York City and devastated Statue of Liberty as an arresting image to warn Americans of the perils of an invasion.
The WWI poster collection was assembled in recent years to compliment an almost complete set of US published World War II posters which Briarwood resident Gordon Lankton had collected as a young boy in Peoria.
Lankton is the retired president of Nypro Inc., world headquartered in Clinton and prior to its sale to Jabil in 2015, Nypro Inc. was the largest specialty plastics molding company in the world. He is the premier American collector of Russian icons, and founder of the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton. In 2009 he received the Pushkin prize from the Russian government.
