Grafton – Join Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo and Melman the giraffe and their friends on a hilarious adventure in Apple Tree Arts’ production of “Madagascar-A Musical Adventure Jr.” Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m., at Grafton Middle School, 22 Providence Rd., Grafton. Admission is $10 for adults; $8 for seniors/students and free for children four years-old and younger. Tickets will be sold at the door.

“This brand new show from Music International has been fun to produce for many reasons,” said Lisa Scarlett, Apple Tree Arts’ theatre arts director. “The upbeat large company musical numbers offer many opportunities for the cast to sing and dance. The show is humorous and appeals to a wide audience who are familiar with the characters from the movie and cartoon programs.”

The musical, based on the DreamWorks animation motion picture and a book by Kevin Del Aguila, tells the story of the zoo animals’ journey after they escape New York City’s Central Park Zoo. They are captured, crated and shipped off to Africa. Luckily the zany penguins who have escaped on their own take control of the ship causing the crates to fall overboard. Eventually the zoo animals are reunited on a tropical island and their adventure continues as they explore the island and try to get back home. After the penguins reach Antarctica they decide to return to their friends.

The 32 cast members in grades five to nine are from Douglas, Grafton, Northbridge, Northborough, Millbury, Sutton, Uxbridge, Worcester and Pascoag, R.I.  Cast members have enjoyed rehearsing popular songs such as “Relax, Be Cool, Chill Out,” “I Like to Move It,” and “Together Forever” during the past two months.
