Shrewsbury – The Greater Worcester Community Foundation has once again awarded $5,000 to the Shrewsbury Public Library to continue the English Conversation Circle program for adult learners who wish to be proficient in the English language and become productive members of our community.
The English Conversation Circle program was launched in 2010 with four weekly classes offered, and in the past year, it was expanded to include a session at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Shrewsbury. It has attracted a diverse group of people who have settled in Shrewsbury and the neighboring towns but who were originally from China, Japan, India, Nepal, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Russia and other countries. This program has served as a launching pad for many new immigrants as they navigate the ins and outs of life in the U.S. Not only does it help them gain confidence speaking English but it also helps them in their social interactions and professional pursuits. They learn about American culture, holidays and traditions and this helps them adapt to life in this country.
The Greater Worcester Community Foundation has helped us sustain the English Conversation Circle program that has served over 450 individuals in the past six years.
Anyone wishing to participate in the English Conversation Circle can contact the library at 508-841-8531 or send an email to [email protected].
