Westborough – Westborough High School junior Miriam Levesque won the Westborough Lions Club Youth Speech Contest in November. This annual statewide contest is designed for students in grades 9 through 12. The contestants must give and memorize a five- to eight-minute speech on a topic chosen annually by the Multiple District 33 Lions.
This year’s topic was “Being Politically Correct: Is It Taken Too Far?” Each speech is judged on three major categories: delivery, effectiveness and text. There are five levels of competition: local, zone, region, district, and state. Prize money is awarded for each step won, culminating in a $1,500 prize to the state winner. Each year, high school students who participate face stiff competition at each level, as the contest attracts highly competitive students with excellent writing and public speaking skills.
Miriam went on to compete in the Zone 2 Contest in Bolton Dec. 19, where she was a runner up.
