Shrewsbury – When Marjorie Hopewell is buried Monday, April 10, 2017 it will be with the same military honors her husband, George, received when he was buried in December 2012. A proud Navy veteran, she honorably served her country in World War II. She enlisted with the United States Navy on June 15, 1943, and as a member of WAVES she served as a storekeeper third class in Washington, D.C.
And now in heaven Margie and George are reunited. She died peacefully on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 in the comfort of her home with her family at her side. She was 93.
Marjorie Flora Dumas was born in Worcester, a daughter of the late Chester J. and Flora M. (Rebidue) Dumas Sr. She graduated from the former Maj. Howard W. Beal High School in Shrewsbury and attended Girls Trade High School. She married Matthew George Hopewell and they were married for 65 years until his death Dec. 23, 2012.
After staying home to raise her three children, she worked at the former Cottage Donuts in White City. Margie was happiest when in sitting her monogrammed beach chair where summers would be spent at Ocean View Campground in Wells, Maine, along the shores of Drakes Island Beach. A talented but amateur artist, she found peace and relaxation in painting and these now serve as a lasting memory to her family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Matthew she was predeceased by her brother, Chester Dumas.
She leaves her children, Bonnie L. Murphy and her husband Kevin of Shrewsbury, Cathy J. Gordon and her husband Steven, and Mark G. Hopewell and his wife Kim, all of West Boylston; she was the much loved “Nana” to seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Marjorie’s life by gathering for calling hours Sunday, April 9, 3-6 p.m., at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury, and again Monday, April 10 where her life will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
