Marlborough – Angela Scott, 23, of Marlborough, is running the 2017 Boston Marathon with two rods and lots of screws in her back.

In 2010, Errol Mortimer, MD, orthopedic surgeon at UMass Memorial Medical Center, put those rods and screws in Scott’s back correcting a 44-degree curve in her spine to now less than 5 degrees.

It was a painful recovery, Angela said, but she wants to let others know that “the future is bright and possibilities endless.”

Diagnosed with scoliosis in second grade, she was monitored until puberty when Dr. Mortimer, an orthopedic surgeon, felt the time was right for surgery.  The two months of immobilization in bed were tough for such an active girl, but the results speak for themselves now.

She is running the marathon on behalf of Team Girl Scouts. Angela works for Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts – and is setting an example of perseverance.

She is the daughter of Francesca and Theodore Scott, of Marlborough.

Angela was kept from completing the Boston Marathon on her first try, in 2013, because of the bombings, so she is trying again this year.
