Shrewsbury – In contrast to a snow and ice storm the previous weekend, pleasant spring weather April 9 attracted 477 runners of all ages for the 10th annual Shrewsbury Road Scholars 5K and One-Mile Fun Run, beginning and ending at Oak Middle School. Proceeds benefit the Shrewsbury Public Schools (SPS) Colonial Fund, which supports projects throughout the district that otherwise wouldn’t get funding.

Finishing the 5K race first overall in 17:55 in a two-way tie were Arthur Besse of Templeton and his running coach Kevin Beck of Boulder, Colo. Beck was visiting Massachusetts to train Besse for the Boston Marathon. The first-place female finishing in 22:09 was Helene Winn of Shrewsbury. Finishing first overall in the untimed fun run was Maxwell Huang, a fifth-grader at Sherwood Middle School.

The top three runners in each age category received a medal and a Marathon Sports gift certificate. All 5K registrants were given a commemorative 10th-anniversary tech T-shirt. All children who participated received a finisher’s medal.

Serving as race organizers were Michelle Biscotti and Kathleen Keohane. Helping to support the event were gold sponsors Avidia Bank and Dunkin’ Donuts; silver sponsors state Rep. Hannah Kane, R-Shrewsbury; National Facility Services and Price Chopper; and bronze sponsors All Access Physical Therapy, Committee to Elect Beth Casavant, Committee to Elect Missy Hollenback and Flaherty Physical Therapy.

For information about the SPS Colonial Fund, visit www.schools.shrewsburyma.gov/future and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SPSColonialFund.
