Marlborough – Welly’s Restaurant in downtown Marlborough at 153 Main St. offers casual dining and large portions at good prices. Parking is available on-street as well as in the municipal lot a block away.

Arriving about 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, we were seated quickly and spent a few minutes going through the numerous choices on the regular menu as well as the many lunch specials being offered. In the dining area, there was a good mix of families and couples out to enjoy some of Chef Wellington’s tasty creations. They also offer an extensive drink menu as part of their full bar service.

The main dining area offers comfortable seating and a number of televisions to watch your favorite sporting event or show. There is also sidewalk seating for those interested in more of a café feel. Adjacent to the main dining area is a no-fee function room that seats 45 to 50 people which is perfect for birthday parties, business luncheons, graduation parties or any other gathering that would like to include delicious Welly’s food. Welly’s also offers catering to local businesses or private events.

We decided to start off with appetizers of boneless chicken wings with sweet and spicy chili sauce and vegetable egg rolls. The wings came with celery and blue cheese dressing to help cut the bit of zing from the sauce. Both appetizers were freshly made and perfectly cooked. They were good choices to start off our lunch.

For the main courses, we decided on the fish tacos and the grilled Naan turkey sandwich. The haddock in the tacos was perfectly cooked with big chunks of avocado and a spicy mayo that enhanced the flavor of the fish. The grilled turkey sandwich had a generous amount of fresh turkey, cheese and bacon with a side Caesar salad that was fresh and crisp.

A trip to Welly’s is not complete without sampling their award-winning clam chowder (2010-12 Marlborough Clam Chowder Champion). By the cup or by the bowl, it does not disappoint.

The portions at Welly’s are very generous, so we had plenty of leftovers to bring home for another meal. Although we were too full, the dessert menu had some delicious-looking choices from sundaes to cakes and even a blueberry white chocolate cheese brulee.

The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. As they all pool their tips they are not individually assigned to tables, as a result you have multiple people attending to your dining needs during the course of your meal.

The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and on Sunday from noon to 8:30 p.m. On most days they offer specials ranging from kids eat for free on Sundays to $2 tacos on Thursdays.

If you are looking for a relaxed place to enjoy some delicious food at good prices, Welly’s Restaurant in downtown Marlborough is the place to go. For more information, visit www.wellysrestaurant.com or their Facebook page.
