Allan G. MacDonald, 87, of ShrewsburyShrewsbury – Allan G. MacDonald, 87, of Shrewsbury, passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 at Beaumont of Westborough, with his loving family at his side.

Allan is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Doris P. (Riley) MacDonald; three sons, Allan G. MacDonald Jr. and his wife Heidi of Boylston, Scott D. MacDonald and his husband Jonathan Smith of Worcester, and John F. MacDonald and his wife Brenda of Worcester; a brother, John B. MacDonald and his wife Gwen of Raynham; a sister, Dorothy F. Hender, wife of the late Walter Hender of Wrenthan; a sister-in-law, Barbara MacDonald of Canton, wife of his deceased brother Eugene L. MacDonald; two grandchildren, Ryan Allan MacDonald and his partner Megan Anderson of Barre and Matthew Riley MacDonald of Haverhill; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister and her husband, Hilda and Robert Maloon of Natick.

Allan was born in East Boston, son of the late Peter J. and Mary Irene (Gallant) MacDonald. He grew up in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, and graduated from the former Jamaica Plain High School in 1947. Upon marrying the love of his life, Doris, they moved to Worcester in 1956, and then in 1968 they settled in Shrewsbury.

Allan worked for 45 years with Stop & Shop Markets throughout the Worcester area, retiring in 1992 as a Department Manager of the Webster Square store. He was a member of Saint Anne’s Church and the Frohsinn Club.

He served his nation proudly in the United States Navy, during the Korean Conflict, aboard the U.S.S. William C. Law DD 736, with his life-long friend and future brother-in-law, Robert.

Allan loved to entertain and socialize with friends, but his most precious times were those spent with family.  He was proud of his Naval service and was a regular attendee of annual Naval reunions.

The MacDonald family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to all of the wonderful “Angels” at Whitney Place and Beaumont in Westborough. Their compassion for Allan and his family made his stay with them comfortable and gave the family peace of mind.

Calling hours for Allan will be held Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 4-7 p.m., in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. His funeral will be held Thursday, Oct. 26 from the funeral home, departing in procession at 9:40 a.m. for a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Tpke. (Route 9 east), Shrewsbury. Interment will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
