Luigi MariShrewsbury – Luigi Mari, 97, of Shrewsbury, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 at Oasis at Dodge Park with his family beside him.

Luigi was born in Sicily, Italy, a son of the late Alberto and Giuseppina (Laveccia) Mari. He graduated from high school in Italy and later joined the Italian Army where he was a prisoner of war for 2 years during World War II. Luigi later moved to Venezuela where he worked for Shell Oil Company and owned and operated gas stations. He came to America settling in Worcester and then Shrewsbury where he has lived for the past 30 years.

Luigi worked for over 40 years as a tool and dye maker for Bronzo’s and later DiPiero Manufacturing. He retired in 2007.

Luigi was a member of St. Anne’s Church in Shrewsbury and loved spending time with his beloved wife Anna and his daughter and grandchildren.

Luigi is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna (Albertelli) Mari; his daughter, Antonella Army; his two grandchildren, Patrick and Tiana Army, all of Shrewsbury; his son-in-law, Timothy Army of Worcester; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Albino and Francesco Mari, and three sisters, Maria Quarta, Lena Manzi and Rosina Mari.

Luigi’s family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff at both Oasis at Doge Park and Jewish Healthcare Hospice for the outstanding care and compassion given to him.

Relatives and friends are invited to a period of calling hours Tuesday, Dec. 12, from 9-10:30 a.m., in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, with a funeral procession to depart at 10:45 a.m. for an 11 a.m. Mass in St. Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Tpke., Shrewsbury. Entombment will follow in Notre Dame Mausoleum, Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.
