Paul J. McCarthyMarlborough – Paul J. McCarthy, 86, of Marlborough and formerly a longtime resident of Southborough, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 at Metro West Medical Center in Framingham. He was the beloved husband of Jean (O’Connell) McCarthy for the past 66 years.

Born in Southborough, he was the son of the late Michael and Angelina (Dufault) McCarthy. Paul was a 1948 graduate of the former Peter’s High School in Southborough and earned an associate degree from Worcester Jr. College.

He worked as a carpenter with his dad, building homes and additions in Southborough before he founded and operated McCarthy Swimming Pools. His pools were well known for their excellent quality throughout Worcester and Middlesex County.

Paul was a hands-on dad, whether it was taking  his children on many memorable vacations to Florida, New Hampshire and Maine, teaching them his professional skills or helping them repair each home as each child bought them. Paul’s greatest joy was spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Dennis McCarthy and his wife Linda of Hudson, Laurie McCarthy of Marlborough, Gary ‘Lou’ McCarthy of Worcester, Brian McCarthy and his wife Karen of Uxbridge, Karen McCarthy and her partner Audra Beauvais of Portsmouth, Kathleen Montgomery-Cardillo and her husband John Cardillo of Northborough; his sister, Evelyn Littlefield of Southborough; his grandchildren, Amie McCarthy, David McCarthy and his wife Emily, Claire McCarthy and her partner Curtis Cadoret, Christine McCarthy, Sage McCarthy Beauvais, Troy and Devin Montgomery, and John Cardillo III; and a great-grandchild, John McCarthy. Paul was predeceased by his sister, Claire McNeil.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Dec. 12, from 4-7 p.m., at Morris Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Southborough. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 10:30 a.m., at St Anne Church, 20 Boston Rd., Southborough. Burial will follow in the Southborough Rural Cemetery.
