Algonquin takes home Boroughs Cup with overtime win

Westborough – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks boys’ ice hockey team defeated the Wachusett Regional Mountaineers with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win in the Boroughs Cup finals, Dec. 17 at Northstar Ice Sports.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Sean Prendergast’s second period goal finally got the Tomahawks on the board.  With 1:05 left in regulation play, Tommy Ackil scored an unassisted power play goal to tie up the game.

Ackil, who was named the tournament MVP, netted the game winning goal for Algonquin just 1:53 into overtime play.  This was the second time in three years that Algonquin has defeated Wachusett in the Boroughs Cup finals.

In the consolation game earlier in the evening, the Westborough High School Rangers defeated the Marlborough High School Panthers by a score of 5-2.
