Marlborough outlasts St. John’s in basketball battle

Shrewsbury – The visiting Marlborough High School Panthers defeated the St. John’s High School Pioneers52-47 in a matchup of two Central Mass. basketball powerhouses in a game played Dec. 22.

Marlborough outscored St. John’s 29-24 in the first half.  St. John’s cut the deficit to 1 point in the fourth quarter, but Marlborough’s defense held them scoreless for the final minute and a half.

St. John’s Sean Burke led all scorers with 26 points, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Marlborough trio Kevin Short (15 points), Stephen DiGregorio (10 points) and Jordan Oliveira (10 points).

With the win, Marlborough improved to 3-1 on the season while St. John’s fell to 3-3.
