Richard PalumboShrewsbury – Richard “Dick” Palumbo, 71, of Shrewsbury, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018 at UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester. He was the husband of 40 years to Barbara (Bello) Palumbo of Shrewsbury.

Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late John “Jack” and Beatrice (Painchaud) Palumbo. Dick was a 1964 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy. He then went on to work as a sales person and order checker for Bay State Tobacco and later as a sales person for Auburn Merchandising.

Since he was 16 years old until 2017, Dick ran the “Murray Broder Group,” a group of singers who volunteered their time to perform Christmas shows at area nursing homes for the residents. Dick also volunteered at St. Peter’s Central Catholic Elementary School for many years, where his daughters attended, to run the spring musical. He loved working with children.

The family would like to thank all the nurses and doctors at UMass University Hospital, ER, 6 ICU, and the Coronary Care Unit Lake Side 3rd Floor for all the wonderful care Richard received, especially Dr. Craig Smith.

Besides his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Palumbo of Shrewsbury and Debra de Leon of North Plainfield, N.J.; and the light and love of his life, his granddaughter, Annalise de Leon. He is also survived by his sister, Theresa Hawksley and her husband Gary of Webster, and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours Tuesday, Jan. 9, from 3:30-6:30 p.m., at St. Mary of the Hills Church, 630 Cross St., Boylston. His funeral Mass will be Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary of the Hills Church, 630 Cross St., Boylston. Burial will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery of Worcester.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Chiampa Funeral Home, ~Sumner House~, 5 Church Rd., Shrewsbury.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Lakeside Coronary Care Unit C, 55 Lake Ave., Worcester, MA 01655.
