Westborough – The Bay State Commons shopping plaza is now home to all of Reliant Medical Group’s Westborough-based services, combining offices at 106 East Main St., Westborough and 24 Lyman St., Southborough, into one comprehensive state-of-the-art facility.

The 46,000-square-foot space, at 900 Union St., occupying the former Linens ’n Things location and next to the Roche Bros. supermarket, will house both adult medicine and pediatric primary care services and several specialty care services, including diabetes education, OB/GYN, ophthalmology/optometry, neurology and radiology.

In an interview before the grand opening,  Steve Knox, Reliant’s COO, explained the facility’s layout was designed with “team rooms” that will allow for doctors and other staff to be in the same space, with patient rooms just off that main space.

“This will help to improve communications between the professional team members, enhancing the patient care,” he noted.

“Welcome, the facility is magnificent, and we’re very excited to have you here,” said Westborough Selectman George Barrette at an open house and ribbon-cutting event held at the new location on Feb. 15.

“The amount of effort and work it takes to get something like this project done is pretty stunning,” said Reliant President and CEO Dr. Tarek Elsawy at the event, which hosted about 150 people.

“It’s not just simply a move down the street,” said Dr. Achal Aggarwal, chief of pediatrics for Reliant in Westborough. “It’s an opportunity for us to create one of the best pediatric practices in the region.”

It was actually Aggarwal, a Westborough resident, who brought the Bay State location to the attention of Reliant officials when the idea of building a new facility was first discussed.

Approximately 90 full-time employees will work at the new location, and Reliant is planning on serving 300-400 patients on a daily basis. According to Westborough Town Planner Jim Robbins, a new traffic study was not done prior to Reliant’s opening as the plaza is still not at capacity. Bay State Commons is also served by a WRTA shuttle bus that stops at the Westborough MBTA commuter rail station.

Robbins feels the Reliant opening will be a boon for not only existing restaurants and retailers at Bay State Commons, but throughout the entire downtown area.

The new location provides modern conveniences, such as check-in kiosks and tablet-based questionnaires. An online patient portal allows patients to even check in at home and then scan a barcode at the kiosk when they arrive for their appointment.

This spring a special garden will be planted in front of the building in memory of the late Nancy Frohloff, a physician and Westborough resident who passed away in 2010.

The relocation of the Westborough offices is the latest in a series of new site relocations for Reliant across Central and Metro West Massachusetts as part of the organization’s comprehensive care transformation plan that provides patients with access to care in a number of new, intentionally designed facilities that focus on enhanced care efficiency for both patients and providers.
