Shrewsbury – Not everyone has welcomed the weather this winter, but the Ski Ward Race Team (SWRT) has made the most of it, capping off the season with a Championship Trophy.

The team, whose home base is Ski Ward in Shrewsbury, is a completely volunteer-run organization comprised of over 130 skiers, ages 5-18. They compete in the Eastern MA Buddy Werner League, which also includes the Nashoba Valley Ski Club (Westford), Prospect Hill Ski Team (Canton), the Bogastow Ski Team (formerly Dover-Sherborn) and the Bradford Ski Team (Bradford).

The 2018 season ended on Sunday, March 3 at Nashoba Valley, where all five teams competed in a Championship Race. Ski Ward Race Team took home the trophy for being the top point scorers of the season.

In addition to their team successes, SWRT sent two racers to the Francis Piche Invitational Tournament at Gunstock on March 18 as part of the Massachusetts State Team: Barbara Forgues of Shrewsbury and Tyler Kondrat of Ashland.

The Ski Ward Race Team is no stranger to winning, having won the Championships for 15 out of the past 18 season.

Practices are held every Friday night starting in December and a total of eight races (Slalom and Giant Slalom) are held on Sundays through January and February. As long as kids can ride the chairlift and ski independently down the hill, they are eligible to join the team. All team members have the opportunity to compete in every race, with awards going to the top 10 finishers in each age group.

The Ski Ward Race Team‘s (SWRT) mission is to promote the ideals of good sportsmanship, and to provide an opportunity for young skiers to develop and improve their individual skiing and racing skills to the best of their ability in a safe and enjoyable recreational ski team setting.  Information on the team can be found on their website at www.skiwardraceteam.com.
