Marlborough – Edward T. Surprenant, 76, of Marlborough, died suddenly Sunday, April 1, 2018 at Marlborough Hospital after spending a wonderful day, surrounded by his family celebrating Easter Sunday dinner. He was the husband of Patricia E. (Grasso) Surprenant for the past 56 years.
He was born in Worcester, raised in Northborough, and attended Boys Trade in Marlborough. He was affectionately known as “Soupy” to many of his friends and co-workers. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Salvatore Padula #82.
Ed worked for the City of Marlborough Department of Public Works for many years before retiring in 1992 after 20 years. Prior to that he worked for the Town of Northborough DPW, and he was also a machinist at numerous shops in the area.
He spent time helping out different friends at various farms, orchards and lumber mills in the area over the years. He enjoyed camping with his family and friends for many years. He loved camping at Coldbrook Resort in Barre, where he met many lifelong friends. He loved his yearly hunting and fishing trips and working on cars, and he was always tinkering on things around the house and inventing projects to keep him busy. He loved teaching anyone who wanted to watch him, how to repair anything and everything. He was a good friend to so many, always there helping out anyone that needed a hand fixing a car or repairing virtually anything.
Ed had a heart of gold and no one felt that more than his grandchildren, which he adored more than he could ever express. Besides his wife, he leaves his mother, Irene (Surprenant) Gaucher of Marlborough; a son, Edward T. Surprenant, Jr. of Marlborough; two daughters, Linda J. Decker and her husband Stephen of Marlborough and Susan H. Lupisella and her husband Dean of Marlborough; five siblings, Guilbert, Vincent and Stephen Busby, Donna Comeau, and Charlotte Wojtaszek; 10 grandchildren, Anthony, Ashley, Krysti and her husband Jeff, Matthew, Mark, Meaghan and her husband Chris, Dylan, Michael and his wife Raechel, Makayla and AJ; two great-grandchildren, Lila and Chloe; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his sister, Carol Reeves.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, April 7, at 11 a.m., in St. Matthias Church, Hemenway Street. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson Street. Calling hours will be held Friday, April 6, from 6-9 p.m., in the Fitzgerald & Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln St., Marlborough.
