Shrewsbury outlasts Hudson in marathon game

Shrewsbury – The Shrewsbury High School Colonials baseball team defeated the Hudson High School Hawks 5-4 in a marathon 14-inning game May 5.

With the score tied up at 4-4 after the end of the regular seven innings, it took another 6 – 2/3 innings of scoreless play before a winner was determined. In the bottom of the 14th inning, with two outs, Tyler Hopping scored from second base on a walkoff single to right field by Dylan Degon.

Degon and John West each had four hits for Shrewsbury.  Declan McSweeney pitched an unheard of 8 -2/3 innings in relief, striking out nine and earning the win.

Spencer Cullen and Michael Chaves each had three hits for Hudson, while Noah Stuart banged out two doubles.  Starting pitcher Simon Fonseca helped his own cause with two hits and two  RBIs.
