Less hair equals more love in Marlborough
MHS students measure their hair to make sure they have 8” to donate.

Marlborough – The long locks dropped at the Marlborough High School (MHS) on May 22 as 15 students and three teachers had their hair cut to donate to the Children with Hair Loss, a nonprofit organization based out of Michigan.  In order to qualify, participants had to have a minimum of 8 inches of hair to donate.

Dr. Miriam Meyer, MHS Educational Team Leader, spearheaded this event.  Although Dr. Meyer has donated her hair seven times and coordinated this charitable event in other districts, this was her first time at MHS.  It was also her first time cutting her long hair with her daughter, 8th grader, Chole Meyer.

“I think this event is awesome!  I’m so proud of my mom for starting this event at MHS and donating my hair with her,” smiled Chole.

Three professional hair stylists donated their time to this worthwhile event: Emily DeBoer from Rocs Hair Salon in Marlborough and Andrea Gamache and John Mendolusky from The Studio of Andrea Gamachi in Leominster.  Mendolusky has been doing “Cut-A-Thons” with Dr. Meyer for 18 years!

“Putting on this type of event takes a lot of coordination,” stated Dr. Meyer, “and I’m grateful to Sarah Hayward and Hilary Lincoln, two students from Marlborough High School’s Interact club, who helped me make fliers, posted them throughout the school, and led the lunch campaign for financial donations that will be donated to the Relay for Life.

In attendance at Marlborough High’s “Cut-A-Thon” was Tom Mason who serves on Marlborough and Hudson’s Committee for the Relay for Life.  This event is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and is taking place in Marlborough on Saturday, June 2.  The Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities and 27 countries who are committed to taking action against cancer.  It is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track or designated path.

“I’m very proud of all the students and teachers who participated in today’s Cut-A-Thon at Marlborough High School and helped raise money for Relay for Life.  We have a very caring community,” said Meyer.
