Northborough – Vilma E. (Grube) Walton passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the age of 87. Before moving to Northborough to be near family, she lived in Glastonbury, CT for over 40 years.

Vilma grew up in Keene, N.H., with her parents, Emile and Mary (Lindstrom) Grube, and her sisters, Mary and Dorothy.

After high school, she attended Mt. Holyoke College, graduating with a BS in Physics. After working as a research assistant and school teacher for a time, she earned her MS in Psychology from the University of New Hampshire.

She was a school psychologist for most of her career, working in the Glastonbury and Windsor, CT schools.

Family was very important to Vilma. Summer was a time for vacations at the Grube cottage on Granite Lake, camping trips and other adventures. Her sons have many fond memories of those times.

Vilma had an active intellect and was an avid reader. Music was also a large part of her life. For many years she sang in the Hartford Chorale. At the end of each season, she wrote and directed a humorous skit that was enjoyed by all.

After retirement, Vilma kept busy with volunteer work, and Elderhostel. She was a trustee of the Friends of Welles-Turner Memorial Library in Glastonbury. She had a strong interest in her mother’s Finnish heritage and traveled to Finland to research her family tree.

Vilma was predeceased by her parents and sisters. She is survived by her two sons, Timothy P. Walton and his wife Amy of Northborough and Christopher B. Walton and his wife Lori Wright of Austin, Texas. She relished time with her grandchildren, Brian Walton, Andrew Walton, Alice Wright and Stephen Wright. She is also remembered fondly by eight nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.

A private memorial service will be held in New Hampshire at a later date.

Vilma’s family respectfully asks that memorial contributions be made in Vilma’s name to the Friends of Welles-Turner Memorial Library, 2407 Main St., Glastonbury, CT 06033.
