Region – Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School student Daniel Prefontaine from Southborough is the recipient of the John P. Garrahan Leadership in Diversity Award. The Alliance for MetroWest Unity annually honors a student from each of the 15 Metrowest high schools in recognition of those students’ outstanding leadership in diversity and unity.

Prefontaine is currently a junior in the plumbing program. His teachers describe him as a genuinely nice young man who has consistently stood out as a leader and role model in is class, not afraid to speak up for what he feels are important issues that affect himself or other students.      Currently, he is participating in Assabet’s cooperative education program, working in Cambridge for TG Gallagher. Prefontaine is an honor roll student and has received Academic Achievement awards every year for his GPA.

Outside of school, he participates in many activities in the Assabet community. He is a member of the cross country team, Principal’s Leadership Team, National Honor Society, and Student Council. Throughout his involvement in Student Council and National Honor Society this year, he helped raise money for the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. He is often seen pitching in at parent’s nights and sporting events. He aspires to attend University of Massachusetts in Amherst, majoring in mechanical and industrial engineering.

The Alliance for MetroWest was founded 26 years ago in collaboration with the MetroWest Chamber of Commerce, the MetroWest Bar Association, and several other Metrowest organizations.
