Hudson – Representative Kate Hogan (D-Stow) presented the “Heritage Day of Portugal” award to Lizett G. Frias of Hudson during a recent ceremony at the State House. “Heritage Day” is hosted annually by the Portuguese-American Legislative Caucus; legislators are invited to nominate a constituent who has made a lasting contribution to their local Portuguese community. This year, the 34th Heritage Day of Portugal was marked by a state visit by Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa, president of the Portuguese Republic.

Frias is a first generation Portuguese-American, daughter of Antonio Frias (Santa Maria, Azores) and Maria Manuela Frias (Sao Miquel, Azores) and an integral member of the Hudson Portuguese community. She is a dedicated member of the Hudson Portuguese Club; over the years, she has contributed to the club by volunteering, serving on boards, and spearheading various programs and events. She is the founder and serves as chair of the S&F annual Golf Classic benefiting the Hudson Portuguese Club, which has grown to be the largest source of support for the club after 11 years and helps to further the club’s mission of promoting and preserving Portuguese heritage for future generations through language, culture, and one-of-a-kind traditions.

Frias’ passion for entrepreneurship, networking and community drives her to be active in many industry and professional organizations and contribute to her local and Portuguese community. She attributes her drive for success to her Portuguese family and upbringing; her father instilled in her a strong work ethic, and her mother routinely reminded her to “be the best you can be,” and that “you can achieve your dreams, but never forget your roots.”

Frias and the other nominees were presented their awards in the Massachusetts House of Representatives’ chamber and enjoyed celebratory refreshments with friends and family in the Hall of Flags. She was joined by her daughters Nicole and Stephanie, and her fiancé, Robert Valchuis.
