Northborough/South Grafton/Niantic, Conn. – Winifred B. (Bunnekamp) Hagarty passed away at home July 4, 2018 at the age of 95.
Winifred was born in Englewood, N.J., daughter to the late William and Mae (Bennett) Bunnekamp. She graduated from Leonia High School, class of 1940, prior to earning her psychology degree in 1944 from Douglass College/Rutgers University.
In December 1943, Winifred married Robert N. Hagarty, a marriage that would span 61 years of devotion to each other until Robert’s death in 2004. From 1956-1994, she resided in Niantic, Conn., moving to the Birchwood Community of Northborough in 1994 and then to South Grafton in 2008 to be closer to family.
Winifred served as librarian for 20 years in the East Lyme, Conn. Public School System. She was a longtime former member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Niantic, Conn. and the Church of the Nativity in Northborough.
She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, participating in community activities, and spending time reading. She had a passion for life and enjoyed traveling; often capturing the sites in her paintings and artwork.
She leaves behind her son, Edward “Ted” Hagarty and his wife Wendy of South Grafton,; a granddaughter, Caitlin Marie Hagarty and her fiancé Jesse Francese of Middleboro; and nieces and nephews. Her eldest son, William K. Hagarty, formerly of Cape May, N.J., predeceased her in 2008.
Calling hours for Winifred will be held Monday, July 9, from 4-6 p.m., at the Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Northborough. She will be laid to rest privately at Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London, Conn.
