Northborough – Patience and trust are the secrets to 70 years of wedded happiness for Northborough couple, Loren and Ann King, who celebrated their 70th anniversary Sept. 16 at their residence at Whitney Place Assisted Living in Northborough.

Five of the couple’s six children were among the two dozen family members in attendance. Daughter Kathy, who lives in North Carolina, was prevented from being there due to Hurricane Florence. The youngest family member present was the couple’s 14-month-old great-granddaughter, Brennley.

The party room at Whitney Place was festive with balloons and flowers and attendees shared a luncheon followed by anniversary cake for dessert.

Loren and Ann grew up in Hudson where they lived just two houses apart on the same street. There was a pond nearby their homes and, according to their son, Marsh, the couple bonded over ice skating and have been together ever since.

After marrying on Sept. 18, 1948, Loren and Ann moved to Boylston where they raised their family. They have three sons, Danny, Gerry and Marsh, and three daughters, Kathy, Betsy and Sarah. They later moved to Northborough.

Sarah shared that her parents wore many hats throughout their lives. Her father’s career began with dairy farming while her mother was a registered nurse.

Loren became the plant superintendent of Marlborough Hospital then taught at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School. Later, he studied to become a deacon and served at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Northborough. He travelled as a deacon throughout the commonwealth and he served briefly in Florida.

Ann used her nursing training in several capacities: first, as a school nurse while her children were growing up, then as a visiting nurse, and later in hospice care.

In addition to patience and trust, Loren said that their long and happy marriage can be attributed to never going to sleep at night without resolving any issues that they may have had during the day. Ann added that they also end the day by reciting the Lord’s Prayer.
