Region – Christopher Roy, a firefighter with the Worcester Fire Department, died Dec. 9 after suffering injuries that occurred as the department was fighting a five-alarm fire on Lowell Street in that city earlier that morning.

Roy, 36, had been with the department for 2-1/2 years and served on Ladder 4 of the Webster Square Fire Station. A resident of Shrewsbury, he leaves behind a nine-year-old daughter, a brother and his parents.

Worcester Mayor Joseph noted that “Once again, December has proven to be the cruelest month of the year for the Worcester Fire Department.”

On Dec. 3, 1999 six firefighters died after being trapped in the former Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co. building. And on Dec. 7, 2011, Firefighter Jon Davies was killed after he ran back into a burning building after being told someone may have been trapped inside.

Roy’s body was transported Monday morning from UMass Memorial Medical Center (University Campus, 55 Lake Avenue North) to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Boston.

We will update this story as more information is obtained.
