Region – Final arrangements have been made for Christopher Roy, a firefighter with the Worcester Fire Department, who died Dec. 9 after suffering injuries that occurred as the department was fighting a five-alarm fire on Lowell Street in that city earlier that morning.
Roy, 36, had been with the department for 2-1/2 years and served on Ladder 4 of the Webster Square Fire Station. A resident of Shrewsbury, he leaves behind a nine-year-old daughter, Ava. .
Worcester Mayor Joseph noted that “Once again, December has proven to be the cruelest month of the year for the Worcester Fire Department.”
On Dec. 3, 1999 six firefighters died after being trapped in the former Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co. building. And on Dec. 7, 2011, Firefighter Jon Davies was killed after he ran back into a burning building after being told someone may have been trapped inside.
Calling hours for Roy will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church, 4 Temple St., Worcester, on Friday, Dec. 14, from 4-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. also at St. John’s Catholic Church following a private family procession from Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home. Roy will be laid to rest at Notre Dame Cemetery, 162 Webster Street, Worcester.
A memorial fund has been established by Worcester Firefighters IAFF Local 1009 in the name of his daughter, Ava Roy. Checks may be made payable to the Ava Roy Fund and mailed directly to the Worcester Fire Department Credit Union, 34 Glennie St, Worcester, MA 01605.
In addition to his daughter, Roy is survived by his parents, Ronald and Michele (Pepin) Roy of Worcester; a brother, Jason Roy and his wife, Jennifer of Shrewsbury; his niece and goddaughter, Ashlynn Roy of Shrewsbury; many aunts, uncles, cousins and his brother and sister firefighters.
