David MassadWestborough – David G. “Duddie” Massad, 90, of Westborough, passed away Dec. 28, 2018, surrounded by his devoted family and loved ones. A local entrepreneur, philanthropist, and loving father, grandfather and friend, Duddie Massad leaves behind a legacy both in the business community and in the hearts of those who knew him.

Duddie was born May 23, 1928 in Worcester, the oldest of four children of Lebanese immigrants Philip and Helen (Zine) Massad. Raised on Grafton Hill, Duddie spent his early life in Worcester and at 18 began his self-made career as an entrepreneur – buying, nurturing, and operating several thriving local businesses as he built his financial empire. Most notably, his portfolio included Duddie Ford, Diamond Chevrolet and Commerce Bank – which he transformed into a formidable banking institution. Devoted to the local community and economy, Duddie prided himself in buying and transforming “locally owned and operated” businesses that added value in the community he loved.

Duddie was, at heart, a philanthropist who never forgot to give back to the community that raised and guided him. Financially supporting and assisting local social service programs gave purpose to his success – most notably his $12.5 million leadership contribution spearheaded the development of the Duddie Massad Emergency and Trauma Center, a state-of-the-art facility at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center Hospital. Duddie was also a key and consistent financial supporter of several local organizations including the Friendly House, St. John’s Food Pantry, the United Way, and the Boys and Girls Club.

Duddie’s wife of 59 years, the love of his life, Bette (Melnikoff) Massad, passed away in 2014; He is survived by his three devoted children, Pamela Massad of Westborough, Christine Mandara and her husband David of Northborough, and David Massad II and his wife Lisa of Shrewsbury; seven grandchildren he adored, Ryan, Emily, Jonathan, Annie, Katie, Teddie, and Rachel; a brother, Philip P. Massad and his wife Geraldine; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and hundreds of friends. Duddie will join several beloved family members and friends in heaven, including his grandson, Gregory, sister Dolores, and brother Donald.

His funeral was celebrated Jan. 2 at St. John Church of Worcester, with burial at Notre Dame Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in his name can be made to the St. John’s Food Pantry, 40 Temple St., Worcester, MA 01604.
