Marlborough – The Marlborough firefighters of the Group 2 fought their second fire in their duty rotation when a fire was reported at the Thomas Energy gas station/convenience store located at 175 Lakeside Avenue early Thursday, Jan. 24. Group 2 also covered the fire at the Immaculate Conception Church Jan. 20. .

The gas station fire was reported at 6:49 a.m. Engine 1, Engine 2, Rescue 1, Ladder 2 and Car 5 responded and found a fire condition in the rear of the structure.  Car 2 arrived on scene and Assistant Chief Fred Flynn assumed command.

Marlborough Police and the Mass. State Police closed off Lakeside Avenue and the on ramp to Route 20 East off of Route I-495.

The fire was brought under control and overhaul operations began to search for any hidden pockets of fire. There was difficulty in opening up the roof to ventilate the area of the fire due to the construction of the roof.

The fire was in the furnace and electrical room area. The Board of Health also responded because of the food and beverages sold at the store.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Marlborough Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit.
