Marlborough – If you stopped at the intersection of Route 85 and Main Street in Marlborough over the last few months, you may have noticed one of three electrical boxes that have received an eye-catching makeover.
Last summer the city launched its Electrical Box Project and provided Boston artist Franklin Marval of Cyanta Studios with three colorful and eye-catching panoramic photographs. Marval generated adhesive photographic scans that were installed on city electrical boxes Sept. 29. A Memorial Beach photo was installed on the corner of Bolton and Main streets; a Labor Day Parade photo was installed at the corner of Granger and Main streets across from Mechanic Street; and a third photo of downtown Marlborough was installed on the corner of Hosmer Street and Route 20.
Marlborough has decided to “think outside the box” and decorate gray nondescript electrical boxes with artwork or photos that showcase town assets.
With the success of the first three boxes, the city has plans to expand this beautification effort and recently received a grant from the Cultural Council for that purpose.
For this fourth box, the city would like to feature the work of a local artist and will be accepting applications throughout the month of March.
Artists who are residents of Marlborough are encouraged to apply. Each submission should be colorful and represent a location or aspect of Marlborough. The chosen artist will be required to submit their artwork to be scanned by Cyanta Studios and installed early summer. The selected artist will be notified and receive $300 for their commissioned work.
“This project is a fun and creative way to not only contribute to the beautification of the city, but to showcase the places, people and talent within,” said Mayor Arthur Vigeant.
Interested artists 16 years and older should email an electronic photo of their painted or drawn artwork to [email protected] along with their name, address, phone number, email, and a description of their work. Art should be created in a horizontal and rectangular format.
