Westborough – A day of sunshine and fresh air was welcomed by approximately 200 people who attended the Westborough Civic Club’s Fishing Challenge May 11. Minuteman Park was staffed with 20 members from the Civic Club, supplying families with rods, bait, and anything else that they needed to have a successful day at Sandra Pond. The twelfth annual fishing challenge drew people of all ages, and Mass Wildlife and Fisheries was there to help answer any questions that people had.

“This event was started by Butch Byrd, but I took over facilitating things about seven years ago,” smiled Dr. Bill Kohler. “Our club started doing this with the spring festival in town, but we ended up moving to a different day so that it now has its own legs.”

An unquestionably popular event, residents form neighboring towns turned out to try their hand at fishing. The pond was stocked in April, and is a popular fishing spot among locals.

“Most of the trout aren’t caught at our event, but at later in the year,” explained Walter Leslie, Civic Club President. “Westborough residents are welcome to fish here anytime, and anyone over 16 needs a license on any other day of the year. This is an educational event, as Mass Wildlife and Fishing are here, so anyone can fish today.”

This fun family event wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of the Civic Club’s Annual Tree Sale. Their only fundraiser, this sale helps the group fund about 40 nonprofits and community events throughout the year, including the fishing challenge.

“Our hope is that families have fun and get outdoors with their kids, and that older folks can get out and enjoy some sunshine,” smiled Kohler.

That simple wish was certainly fulfilled, thanks to the efforts of many.
