Fine custom carpentry, with a focus on interior and exterior residential remodeling
By Bonnie Adams, Managing Editor
Shrewsbury – As the owner of his own company, Valois Home Improvements, Raymond Valois offers his customers nearly 20 years of experience of fine custom carpentry, with a focus on interior and exterior residential remodeling. Projects range from kitchen and bath renovations, porches, custom decks, windows and doors, custom woodworking, finished basements, stairs and railings and fine finish carpentry.
Prior to starting his business, Valois worked as a commercial photographer in the advertising business for many years. During pockets of downtime, he worked as a handyman, using skills he learned from his father growing up. As he took on more of those jobs, he started learning more and thus, taking on more complicated jobs. In 1999, he decided to pursue home renovations fulltime.
“Ever since I got into this business, I have always strived to keep learning,” he said. “I have taken many seminars and continue to do so, to stay ahead of the latest techniques.”
Valois’ artistic background still plays an important role in his job.
“I’m still creative now – just using my skills in a different way,” he said. “I definitely use those skills I gained as a photographer to help a customer see the possibilities and how something can ultimately look when it’s done.”
“Problem solving is almost second nature to me,” he added. “When I meet a customer at their home, I am always situationally aware and pay close attention to the aesthetics, how things are holding up, how they live their lives.”
But the heart of his success, he notes, and what has gained him many repeat customers, is his professionalism, quality customer service and an impeccable attention to every detail.
The majority of most of his customers are homeowners who are updating their current residences.
“Perhaps their lifestyle has changed, the family has grown or the kids have all moved out,” he said. “They want to stay there but make changes to best suit their new lifestyle.”
Many of his clients are also repeat clients or referrals. He believes that goes back to the “Golden Rule” of treating customers as he would like to be treated. Customers know, he said, that if they are waiting for a call back, they will get it promptly. He and his crew will be on time to a job, and adhere to deadlines as much as they possibly can. They treat the work site with respect, taking care while they are there and leaving it neat and tidy when they leave. All subcontractors are vetted to ensure they meet his high standards of work ethic and craftsmanship as well.
“Great craftsmanship, the attention to the little details that really add to the product, is almost becoming a lost art,” he added. “We don’t just go in and ‘do a job’. We are determined to always give our customers our very best and something that they will be proud to have in their homes.
