Marlborough Police Chief and Department honored for patriotic support  Marlborough Police Chief David Giorgi and the Marlborough Police Department were recently awarded the Patriot Award and the Above and Beyond Award respectively by the Employer Support of the National Guard and Reserve (ESGR). ESGR is a Department of Defense program established to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers.

The Patriot Award was created to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who have answered the nation’s call to serve. The recipient is nominated by a Guardsman or Reservist employee for support provided directly to those employees. Chief Giorgi was nominated for being highly supportive of the National Guard/Reserve Service by one of his Reserve Component employees.

The Above and Beyond Award is presented by ESGR State Committees to recognize employers at the local level who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act by providing their Guard and Reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, and other similar benefits. The award is given in limited numbers by State Committees to employers who have had at least one of their supervisors/managers recognized with a Patriot Award, and who have signed or agree to sign an ESGR Statement of Support.

According to Giorgi, “The Marlborough Police Department currently has four department members who are active National Guard/Reservists. On behalf of the members of the Marlborough Police Department and the City of Marlborough, I am proud and honored to accept these awards. The members of our department who are active National Guard/Reservists make considerable sacrifices to not only serve the City of Marlborough, but also to fulfill their duties as service members in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve Components of the military. As a department and a City, we respect their service and do all that we can to support them”.
