Hudson/Marlborough – The annual Hudson Youth Summer Track program is sprinting through another year introducing young athletes to the sport, even as construction at its longtime home track at Hudson High School has forced it to relocate to Marlborough High School for its practices.

Open to children aged 8-14, the program runs twice a week throughout the summer. Seeking to educate on the basics of track and field, participants train with a crew of coaches on Tuesday afternoons before traveling to Framingham for weekly regional meets featuring competitions in everything from 100 meter sprints to long jumps.

“It’s a low key, fun atmosphere,” said head coach and program director Kathy Vincuillo.

This year’s program does have lower enrollment then usual due, Vincuillo guesses, to the change in location. But even so, she and other program organizers are excited to continue filling the program’s role in the community.

“Having a youth program through the rec department gives us an opportunity for kids to get an introduction [to track and field] before they get to high school. This has always been a good feeder program into the high school programs. We’re proud of that.”
