Shrewsbury – Mary Ellen Racine spent her 78th birthday celebrating with about 90 friends at the second Annual Shrewsbury Senior Prom held Sept. 12 at Shrewsbury’s Senior Center. She was accompanied by her beau, Jim McKiernan.

Sharon Yager, Council on Aging director, was excited to welcome the guests, most of whom were dressed in formal wear and ready to party. She noted the addition of a disco ball this year. She also shared that Lakeside Bar and Grill catered the event and the Residence at Orchard Grove provided a sumptuous array of appetizers. Coffee and cake were served afterward.

Michael Perna, who is this year’s Spirit of Shrewsbury Grand Marshal, and his wife Sandy were also in attendance. He said that the evening was a very nice event.

The room was beautifully decorated and guests were treated to entertainment provided by Joe Cariglia with music ranging from the standards of the big band era, including Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett to many contemporary selections.

The crowd even formed a conga line which was led by event chair Maria Smith.

The evening was capped by the naming of Prom King and Queen.  The honors went to Gerry and Judy Johnson who shared that they have been married for 56 years.

Judging by the response of the attendees, a third Annual Senior Prom will take place next fall.
