Shrewsbury – The Spirit of Shrewsbury held the first pizza contest, with a theme of “Game On” after the 24th annual fall parade Sept. 29. Participants from the parade were all invited to come eat samples and vote at the contest which was held at the Oak Middle School.
The volunteers of Shrewsbury Girl Scout troops 11128,11140, and 11571, Scouts Shannon, Taylor, Mia, Siri, Elizabeth, Mia, Katelyn, and Sophia, their leaders and a few Shrewsbury high school girls stepped in to represent the establishments. They served over 1,620 slices of donated pizza in 26 minutes.
Dean Park’s owner Christo Baltas went above and beyond the requested donation with an extra 10 pizzas served by his wife Carolyn and company.
Presenting pizzas in all three categories, the Baltas’ took back to Dean Park Pizza and Grill the Best Pizza in Shrewsbury Trophy.
Pepperoni Express proudly took the outstanding performance award and Domino’s won the best meat pizza vote.
Domino’s overcame a full management change just the Wednesday before the contest and Amicis Restaurant also had a chef change. The SOS Committee noted that they were “so happy and grateful” the two restaurants could still compete in the contest. Shrewsbury Pizzeria and PapaGino’s also put out great effort to celebrate the day with pizza for the community.
All competitors stated how much they love the community spirit and were excited to compete.
“It’s great everyone likes pizza,” said Special Olympian (and pizza fan) Ryan, who proudly wore his silver medal he received as part of the Shrewsbury Special Olympics Basketball team that traveled to Abu Dhabi for the Special Olympics World Games earlier this year.
Fans and volunteers alike are eagerly awaiting next year’s contest with Curtis Falzoi asking, “Will there be a rematch?”
