David A. Condon JrShrewsbury – David A. Condon Jr. of Shrewsbury, a veteran, father of four, grandfather to six and loving husband to the late Doris (Perry) Condon, died on Saturday surrounded by family. He was 90.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of the late David and Mary (Finneran) Condon. He graduated from Rindge Tech High School in 1947 and was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His two years of stateside service changed his life by making it possible, through the G.I. Bill, to further his education. He graduated from Boston University in 1957 with a degree in business.

He and Doris married in 1960 and lived in Springfield before moving to Shrewsbury in 1963. After years of managing a bustling home with four kids, they were fortunate to enjoy their retirement years with trips to Ireland, Alaska and Hungary, in addition to many winters spent in Florida. He would often marvel on those trips how a poor kid from Cambridge had made it that far from Central Square.

In addition to serving his country proudly, he also devoted many hours to his community. For years he was an elected town meeting member and a member of the

Shrewsbury Knights of Columbus. He and Doris were especially active in St. Mary’s Parish where they found much love and friendship for more than half a century. He also loved spending time on the golf course and was a competitor for more than 40 years in the Worcester Hahnemann Hospital Golf League, another source of great friendships. After a mild stroke late in 2018, he got back on the links a few last times in 2019.

David was devoted to his beloved wife, eventually caring for her through her long battle with Parkinson’s Disease before saying goodbye in April of this year.

He was a warm and wise father and grandfather, teaching by quiet example that life is best and most joyfully lived close to family, with many friends, a ready smile for strangers and, always, good humor.

He is survived by his daughter, Maribeth, of San Diego, Ca., son David and his wife Cheryl of Upton, son Christopher and his wife Dora Szalai of Herndon, Va., and daughter Carol and her husband Jeffrey Lourie of Uxbridge. He leaves six grandchildren: Gabriella Lourie of New York City, Isabella Lourie, a student at UMass Amherst, Shannon Condon, a student at the University of Virginia, Siobhan Condon of Herndon, Va., and Zachary and Cameron Condon of Upton. He is also survived by his brother Raymond and his wife Nancy of Waltham, his sister Mary Cieslik of Waltham, sister-in-law Ann Condon of Burlington, sister-in-law Susan Curry and her husband Richard of Groveland, sister-in-law Nancy Ambrose and her husband Clifford of N. Eastham, brother-in-law Hubert Gaspar of Ipswich and more than 20 nieces and nephews. In addition to Doris, he was predeceased by his sisters Marie Fitzgerald and Edith Stevens, by his brother Richard Condon, and by his brothers- and sisters-in law Everett Fitzgerald, William Stevens, Richard Cieslik and Sandy Gaspar.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday,

December 26 at the Chiampa Funeral Home ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street. Shrewsbury on Friday, December 27 at 10:00 AM. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
