Aspasia Goltsis, 89, of Marlborough

Aspasia GoltsisMarlborough – Aspasia “Bess” (Daopoulos) Goltsis, of Marlborough, died Thursday, December 26, 2019, at age 89. She was a truly beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher.

Bess was born in Marlborough to James and Rose (Scouras) Daopoulos of Greece. She was very close to her older brother George Daopoulos, whom she loved and admired, and his children Martha Stefanidakis and Jim Daopoulos. She was named for an older sister she never knew.

The family had great memories of summers at Revere Beach where Bessie made lifelong friends at her summer job throughout high school and college — operating the famous merry-go-round.

She attended Marlborough public schools, graduated from Framingham State Teachers’ College, and went on to teach second grade and remedial reading in Marlborough for many wonderful years. She loved creating a place for her students to learn and be expressive with as much music and fun as could be brought into it. She valued her friendships with fellow teachers and, long into retirement, she would hear from former students who had loved their time with her.

In 1953 while visiting Greece she had met and married William Goltsis. They were a very devoted couple who centered their lives on their home and family until his death in January 2017. The Saints Anargyroi community was an important part of their lives here for decades. Bessie taught Sunday School, played the organ and at times directed the Church choir, and was an officer in the Daughters of Penelope. A survivor of polio as a young child, she was also very active in the March of Dimes.

Bess leaves her children Constance Kotsaftis and her husband Elias, Eleni Rosier, and John Goltsis, all currently in Marlborough, her grandson Galaxias Kotsaftis whom she adored and her first cousin, Ginger (Scouras) Camacho.

She was kind and truly generous, she had a warm and smart sense of humor, and most notably of all — a beautiful, quick, encouraging smile.

For those who have asked: in lieu of flowers, a donation might be made in her memory to St Jude’s Hospital Research Hospital For Children.
