Westborough Police alerts public to scam involving National Grid

Westborough – The Westborough Police Department has alerted residents of a scam/fraud tactic involving National Grid. According to the department, the scam involved a phone call from an unknown number with a person on the line impersonating a National Grid employee. The “employee” was able to tell the balance of the person’s National Grid bill and then demanded payment or their power will be shut off.

The scammer then demanded payment though a Money Pak or a purchased credit card with the amount owed on the card. The person then called back the number and was given directions to read the card number and scratch off the back so the card could be processed.
The police stressed that there is a process that National Grid goes through to shut off power to a residence due to non-payment. They noted that if you get a call from a person claiming to be from National Grid, call them back on their business line, do not call back the number that they (scammer) called you from, even if the caller ID says National Grid.
Residents should call their local police departments with questions or to file a report if they believe they have been scanned.
