Southborough – Susan Lubner, a Southborough children’s book author, Susan Lubner, paid a visit to the Margaret Neary Elementary School to read to the fourth grade students on Feb. 4 as part of the school’s celebration of World Read Aloud Day.

“She was here last year for the fifth grade students and I was so inspired by her writing process that I said let’s bring her in here for the fourth,” remarked school Principal Kathleen Valenti. “She was great!”

Lubner is no stranger to the school; she was a volunteer in the school library when her daughters (now in their twenties) attended the school.

When asked how long she had been writing, Lubner replied, “I’ve been writing for a very long-time. My journey into children’s writing stated about 25 years ago and my first book was published in 2005 with a co-author but my first story I sold to ‘Cricket Magazine’ in 2003.”

Lubner read an excerpt from her latest chapter book, “Lizzie and the Good Luck Girl,” which is ideally suited for the upper elementary school age range.

According to Good Reads, it is a story that is “Told with humor and heart, this is a middle grade story about family, friendship, and hope–plus cats in sweaters!”

After completing her read aloud, Lubner fielded questions from the students who were not shy. Questions ranged from how long it took her write the book to whether or not she takes breaks between books.

The time it took her to write her latest book was about two years, she said. She definitely takes breaks between projects, she added, during which she said she loves to read.
