Region – Area voters headed to the polls March 3 for this year’s Super Tuesday primaries, with most Democrats choosing former Vice President Joe Biden as the surprise leader in a statewide race that many had expected to come down to Mass. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Featuring the busiest Mass. Democratic primary field since 1988 in terms of actively campaigning candidates, experts anticipated the primaries would draw above average turnout. A highly publicized Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll before election day, though, suggested those throngs of voters would largely be deciding between Sanders or Warren, not Biden.

That prediction proved unfounded, however, as polls closed and precincts across the region and the state began reporting results.

Indeed, even as the Associated Press called the race in his favor late Tuesday night, Biden was also leading in every area town.

In nearly every town, it was Biden on top, followed by Sanders and Warren. In spite of an aggressive media and postal mailing blitz, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg came in fourth among those still actively seeking the nomination.

In addition to the Democratic primaries, local Republicans also held their primary, favoring President Donald Trump in spite of the challenge of former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld.
