During crisis, Northborough Rotary commits to helping kids with food insecurity

Northborough – The Northborough Rotary Club is committed to continuing to help the town’s children who may be facing food insecurity through its program Nutrition 68.

The number 68 refers to the hours of food insecurity that some school children experience from lunchtime on Friday till lunchtime on Monday.

During the normal school year, these children are sent home every weekend with a backpack filled with items such as crackers, tuna, soup, pasta and cereal to help sustain the student and their family.

But those children, of course, are now not in school due to the pandemic but the need, Rotarians Skip and Pat Doyle noted, is not only there, but now even more pressing.

As a result, Rotary volunteers have packed up boxes for the families with enough provisions to help through several weeks. The principals of the different schools have then arranged for distribution to the families.

The club received $3,000 through a Rotary District Grant and the club contributed $1,500 through other fundraising efforts to fund the program.

“We know that this need is only going to continue,” Pat said. “Especially as more people are facing unemployment and kids can’t go to school. So we would be grateful for any monetary donations.”
