Southborough – Nyah Yazdani and Grace Bouzan, Cadette Girl Scout members of Troop 89255, have earned their Silver Award for their project, “A Day Outside with Girl Scouts”.  The event was held last October at the Beals Preserve, which is part of the Southborough Open Land Foundation.

“We love to spend time outside, in nature as Scouts but have been observing that younger Girl Scouts are not exploring outside as much as we did at their age,” the host scouts said. “We have interviewed local GS leaders and learned that they are not getting their troops outside as much as they wished they would.”

“Our goal was to show younger Scouts how much fun it can be to spend time in nature with the goal that the scouts, their leaders and families will be motivated to explore the great outdoors together,” they added.

Some of the activities at the girls’ event were learning “fire building” skills with candy and pretzels, learning and exploring trail blazing, singing Girl Scout songs and nature exploration experiences.

The Silver Award Project is the second of three high awards in Girl Scouts (the top is the Gold Award, which is similar to the Boy Scouts Eagle Award.) Only 7 percent of eligible Girl Scouts earn the Silver Award.
